It is bisected by the A64T York to Scarborough road with development fronting the road. It lies on the northern foothills of the Yorkshire Wolds.
The heart of the village is the crossroads between the A64 and the Brompton to Weaverthorpe Road. Here businesses and dwellings cluster together.
The north of the village has seen the majority of the built form over the years along St Hildas Street.
In terms of services and amenities Sherburn is well provided for with Sherburnn forge and ironmongery, a fire station, a Methodist chapel, 2 general stores, primary school, village hall and surgery. There is also St Hildas parish church occupying a pleasant open site on the northern fringes of the village.
Kingspan / Atlas Ward also have a large factory in the village and is one of the areas key employers.
